About this Program

Parent Education is a multi-disciplinary educational process designed to facilitate the parent's role in the child's growth and development and the family's unity.  Parent Education encourages parents to acquire additional communication, child guidance and decision-making skills that are congruent with their values, the child's developmental needs and society's demands.

Program History

In 1926, parent education classes entitled Child Study were established in the Los Angeles Unified School District in cooperation with the California State PTA and the State Department of Education's Bureau of Child Study and Parent Education.  In 1936, the first parent/child classes were founded by a grant from the Phoebe Apperson Hearst Foundation.

The child observation, infant/toddler parent education programs were the foundation of our parent education program.

Over the years the Parent Education Department program has expanded to include Family Literacy Programs: the parent education and Parent and Children Together (PACT) time (components of the Family Literacy Program,) Skillful Parenting and Domestic Violence for court mandated and recovering parents, Distance Learning, "The Now and Future Parent," "Surviving the Teen Years," Parent Education classes for fathers and working parents and the Parent Involvement Project.  Today the Division offers 49 courses in parent education.

What is SRLDP?

SRLDP Parent Education is a component of the School Readiness Language Development Program, a prekindergarten program designed for pupils attending predominantly Hispanic, Black, Asian, and other non-Anglo schools (PHBAO).  The target population for SRLDP parent education consists of parents and caregivers of the SRLDP pre-kindergarten children. A parent, or substitute, whose child is enrolled in SRLDP must participate in ten sessions.
